Manage Your Baby's Diarrhoea

Diarrhoea is one of the leading cause of death in children under age of 5. Because of water and salts are lost in great amounts during diarrhoea this often leads to dehydration.

Common Cause

Rotavirus is the common cause of diarrhoea. When children are infected by this virus, they will get sudden fever and vomitting, followed by watery diarrhoea

Preventing diarrhoea

1- Exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months
2-Practice good hygiene
3-Food must be thoroughly cooked and has not been kept at room temperature for more than an hour
4-Immunisation

What Can be Done?

1- Make sure your child drinks enough liquid to prevent dehydration
2-Wash your hands often to prevent infection
3-Give small, frequent amount of clear liquids. Special fluid replacement drinks also helps (ORS)
4-Gradually give your child small meals like porridge or clear soup

When to see the doctor?

1-Moderate fever 37.5degree celcius and above
2-Dehydration-increased thirst, dull eyes, dry tongue, infrequent urine/dark urine
3-Bloody stools
4-Severe vomitting
5-Severe abnominal pain
6-Severe diarrhoea
